Movie Review - Kabali

Image
This 150.31 minutes much hyped movie is a big disaster. It is a hot air balloon blown beyond limits and pierced with a small pin in the theaters by the audience. There is no story in the first place and the screenplay gives the impression that bits and pieces have been added together to make a full length film especially for Telugu audience as the dubbing is so dismal.  This movie released in Tamil,Hindi and Telugu is sure to disappoint movie lovers and Rajini fans equally. The cast selection is very inappropriate and the background score doesn't give the feeling that a gang war is indeed happening on the screen.  Rajini, who played the lead Kabali ( Kabaaleeshwaran) was probably felt to be too frail for the role that the director had to cover him in a blazer/suit and try to justify the same in the storyline. The audience patience is tested to the hilt in the scene in which the graduation ceremony is shown where Kabali is asked questions about his personal life and past. That is wh

Movie Review - Gentleman (Telugu)

This 144.30 minutes movie has proven yet again that a skilled director can get the maximum out of his cast.  The film opens up with the mandatory caution on smoking and drinking with Nani's voice saying "Mandhu, cigarette traagakandi - pothaaru - hero aina, villain aina". That sounded good and natural with the required fun element and the message.  The storyline by David Nathan is good and the screenplay by Mohan Krishna Indraganti added a touch of thrill and suspense right till the last minute. The film opens with two young, good looking women as co-passengers aboard an international flight sharing their love stories to pass time during the course of the flight. Surabhi and Niveda Thomas played these two characters as Aishwarya and Catherine respectively in a neat manner with the latter stealing the show by virtue of her role. How their love stories evolved was captured innovatively and youthfully by the director. The first half of the film takes the audience till the do

Making a difference

Today I met a well educated young women in her late 20s who came to see me at my office for some official transaction. After I heard from her, what she did for a living, I felt quite impressed and couldn't help sharing it here as I realised that she is one of those unique persons whom we rarely come across. I also came to know that there is something called a Gandhi Fellowship program offered by an NGO. I am not going to dwell about what this fellowship is all about.  When every kid wants to pursue engineering or medicine or join leading institutes and get into well paying jobs, there are some who walk a different path to make a change in the life of others and she is one of them. They are really in small numbers which I realised are in 10s to be precise. What impressed me the most was that,as part of the fellowship program, she lived in a slum for one complete month with just two pairs of clothes and Rs.200 in the pocket. Nothing more and nothing less. She had to live like a slum

Movie Review - Brahmotsavam (Telugu)

This 156 minutes movie is sure to test audience patience levels as they are left yawning through out the duration of the movie. The movie directed by Sreekanth Addala opens with a plot that is confusing to say the least. A small girl sighing to Mahesh to marry her is in too bad a taste. Though the goal of the movie is appreciable, the screenplay is too lousy and irritating. It felt more like a photo session for the starry looking Mahesh Babu than a motion picture. The conversations between Mahesh and Kajal are meaningless and make the audience swirl in their seats and make them restless. There are so many big time actors in the movie but one gets to feel that several crows have gathered at one place making horrible and unbearable noise. Director Srikanth may be sentimental about Rohini Hattangadi who also acted in SVSC which did reasonably well at the box office and so she finds a character in this film too. There were too many group dances and songs, probably to justify the title of t

Movie Review - Sarainodu (Telugu)

Every Director gets into his own groove after a few 'successful' films and tries to beat around the same line out of fear of failure and this movie stands testimony to that. Boyapati Sreenu is no exception. This movie which has an item song with the word 'block buster' is definitely not one such. The entire length of 159.20 minutes requires patience to be able to bear the machismo of the hero, though Allu Arjun has excelled himself in this film as Gana. He has proved once again that he is one of the best of the current lot of heroes especially in fights and dances.  The story is about a young man,the son of Chief Secretary of a state, who reportedly returns from Army as he finds that there is a lot to do in the society than at the borders. Typically like in Boyapati's movies, the hero is shown as an extraordinary person with unbelievable strength and machoism fighting against a villain who is equally macho but bad. Aadhi played the role as Vairam Dhanush, the son of

Movie Review - Sardar Gabbar Singh (Telugu)

The best gift Telugu people can get on Ugadi is a big star's film releasing on the day. This 163 minute movie is an out and out entertainer for the fans of Pawan Kalyan which he has dedicated to them. The story as the poster says is all about guns, guts and love. The dialogues by Sai Madhav Burra, are well written and impactfully delivered by the characters. Some of the dialogues worth mentioning are "chanipoyina vyavastholo praanalu vetukutunnam", "yevari pani vaalllu cheysthe thanks cheppakoodadu, adedo goppanukoni appudappudu manchi cheystuntaaru", "gelavataniki vacchhinavaadu raju kaadhu, gelichina vaade Raju", "puttina prathiokkadu bhoomi naadhi anukuntaadu, kaani chivariki vaadu bhoomike chendutaadu". The film as expected is about how the hero, Sardar Gabbar Singh saves an entire town Rattanpur in Chattisgarh from the powerful clutches of one Raja Bhairav Singh, played impressively by Sharad Kelkar. The storyline of the film for which Pa

Actions speak louder than words

I woke up to the unpalatable news on the front page of  ‪‎ Mumbai‬  edition of the 'leading' national daily that a  ‪‎ MLA‬  belonging to  AIMIM‬  has been suspended from Assembly for the remainder of the current session after he refused to chant ' BharatMataKiJai‬ '. The MLA is reportedly considered as an 'anti-national'. The members who generally fight over every minor issue in the House were united in their voice to recommend suspension of this MLA. There is also a 'big' deb ate in the country on what should be done to those who do not want to chant  ‪ BMKJ‬ .  While I am not attempting to question the 'collective wisdom' of the members nor supporting those who do not want to say Bharat Mata Ki Jai, it is time to question some of the elected representatives of various Houses in this country if they knew the National Anthem. If not hailing 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' is 'anti-national', then what does not knowing the   ‪‎

Banked Loans and Blanked Loans

Shazeer(name changed)is an employee with a private limited company. A family man with two children, he had a good track record of credit. He belongs to a middle class family and as would be the dream of anyone, he too had a dream to own a house/flat. After finalizing a flat for purchase, he approached a government bank for a loan of Rs.25 lakhs after planning to chip in his own savings of another Rs.5 lakhs to complete the purchase. After several rounds to the bank and signi ng a thousand times on hundreds of documents along with his wife as co-applicant, the loan was approved. Having purchased the flat and living in that, he ensured that the post dated cheques given to the bank were honoured. This went on for five years. Suddenly one 'fine' day, he lost his job owing to the tough market conditions that his company faced. He was one among the staff that the company laid off.  For the next six months he couldn't pay the housing loan EMIs and went to the bank to exp

Sandals and Shoes

Friend A : Hey! Did you hear this about a guy called Sumit Agrawal who sent Rs.364/ to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal asking him to buy shoes!!?? I He is reportedly 'ashamed' that the Delhi CM went to meet French President Francois Hollande at Rashtrapathi Bhawan in sandals and not shoes. Friend B : Yeah! I read it in the news recently and thought the guy must be a moron to have done like that. Friend A : Why do you say he is a moron? Friend B : Just imagine, Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of our nation, went around in simple dress of an Indian peasant. Millions of Indians who fought for Independence and walked behind him felt Gandhi was one among them. He went to meet British Emperor George V in London in the same dress in spite of strict dress code and protocol. If a leader is a Gandhian , what is wrong in following Gandhian way of life? Does this moron know that? Friend A : He may not be aware as he is an 'engineer' and may not know much about the freedom struggle.

Movie Review - Dictator (Telugu)

Dubbed as the 99 th film for Balakrishna, it appears that he is somehow bent upon completing 100 films. Directed by Sriwaas, this is another high decibel, punch-dialogue driven film of Balakrishna. The story felt like a never ending saga with the hero delivering all dialogues in the same tone and diction irrespective of the scenes. That is one of the biggest drawbacks in the film. The story of the film feels like a mixed vegetable curry with the ‘vegetables’ being the movies Rajinikanth’s Basha, Surya’s Ghajini and Mahesh’s Dookudu. The story is about how India’s biggest business man fights against the organized crime in which businessmen are threatened by mafia that demanded protection money. Except for a few comedy scenes created around the characters played Hema( as Hema Patnaik) and Prithvi( as Mahesh Patro), the first half has nothing much to boast about. In one of the scenes, Balakrishna delivers a long dialogue highlighting the ‘greatness’ of movie actors and how they infl

Nagarjuna has made it again. Produced by Annapurna Studios, his production house, this movie will send the audience home in a happy and cheerful mood. The plot for this 145 minutes movie opens in Sivapuram, a remote and beautiful village called Sivapuram. Directed by Kalyan Krishna, we would get to see the beauty of countryside in Godavari districts. Nagarjuna has done a fabulous job in the dual roles he played as Bangarraju and Dr.Rammohan. His performance as Bangarraju is so lively that the audience would fall in love with the character and the actor. Supported by the highly talented Ramya Krishnan who played as his wife Satyabhama, both of them rocked the screen with laudable action. His other role as doctor Rammohan too is impressive. Lavanya Tripathi as Sita, wife of Rammohan, did her role very easily and naturally. Nagarjuna switched between the roles with ease and élan. Nagarjuna, true to his Manmathudu style has many female characters in the film namely, Anushka, Hamasanand

Movie Review - Naannaku Prematho (Telugu)

This film which is the 25 th for Jr.NTR doesn’t disappoint you to say the least. Given the credentials and track record of director Sukumar, the 168 minutes film may not be a match for his past films, (leave alone 1 Ninokkadine which was a damp squib). Sukumar always bases the story-line of his films on one simple popular belief and this film is no different. The entire story runs on the belief that every event, big or small, happening across the globe has an effect on something else, elsewhere in the world. This starts from the way the titles were presented. The film is about how the hero Abhiram(Jr. NTR) avenges to fulfill his father’s ( played by Rajendra Prasad) last wish, which is to witness the downfall of a villain Krishna Murthy Koutilya( played by Jagapathi Babu) who cheated him in the past. Jr. NTR played the role with all the honesty that the character needed. He lived the role except in the climax wherein it looked a bit weird and too unrealistic. His dances as usual a

Small yet powerful

(Reproduced from FB post dated 7th January 2016) If you thought what a small insect can do to a big plane of the size of Boeing 737, please reconsider your view. As per a news item in today's newspaper, "a bee delayed a passenger plane, operated by Indonesian carrier Garuda, for four hours after getting stuck in vital equipment and causing a problem with the aircraft's controls. The flight was scheduled to take off from Sumatra and head for Jakarta."  Interesting, isn't it !!!! Never underestimate the power of people or things or beings by their size or their position because they are powerful in their own way.

Salute the real heroes of India

(Reproduced from FB post dated 4th January 2016) My salutes to these real heroes of India who were martyred while fighting against the terrorists at Pathankot for the safety of our country - Lt.Col.Niranjan, Corporal Gurusevak, Lancenayak Phulwanth, Subedar Fateh Singh, Sepoys - Sanjeev Kumar, Jagadishchand and Mohitchand. While many of our leaders are busy finding ways to make money and acquire properties to lead ultra-luxurious lives at the cost of public money, we have such great men as these who fight constantly and sel flessly to protect us and the nation from invaders leaving their families behind.  These heroes have no agenda of their own except doing their duty and serving the nation. They come up the ranks through sheer hard-work and commitment with the sole aim of protecting the country.  On the other hand we have our political leaders who come to power through foul means and occupy positions given to them by the grand electorate. They plan elaborately for their sons and

What comes first - Process or Purpose

Many a times organizations are in a dilemma as to what comes first between purpose and process. Now, first things first - it is purpose that precedes process. Any process is basically created with a purpose in mind and a desired goal, both of which could vary from situation to situation and organization to organization. As long as the purpose is served, even if there is an occasional detour on the processes, it should not be a cause for concern. This does not undermine the importance of process but on the other hand emphasizes the fact that purpose is at the core of any process. To run the daily business, however small or big the same may be, managements may devise any number of processes for the sake of having a control mechanism in place and to ensure that these processes ultimately drive the business in the right and expected direction. All businesses have a purpose and that is to serve the customers. There could arise several occasions for any organization when the managements
