Brazil Dairy - Day 7

On this day we were taken to the subway. Mr.Serau picked me up at 7 am from my host’s place. We traveled in a subway train from Bresser to Se Se via Brais, Pedro II , Sau Bente , Se Se Liberdade, Sao Jaqueino , Verguiero.

Sao Paulo Metro covers 39 cities and has 5 lines.Line 4 is under construction. Line 1 covers 23 stations, Line 2 covers 8 stations,Line 3 covers 20 stations and Line 5 covers 6 stations. Mr.Lazarani is the Manager of SP Metro and explained to us how the Metro works.

As per a survey, 75% people traveled by bus, 16% by Metro and 8.8% by other transports. The share of Metro has dropped from 20.4% in 2003 to 15.6% in 2005 due to stiff competition from the bus operators who offered 4-5 trips on one ticket. More people preferred buses to ‘Metro’ taking up the share of buses from 65.3% in 2003 to 75% in 2005. Metro has extended to 60.2 kms and has 101 seconds in headway peak covering a total of 54 stations with 702 motorized cars. The distance traveled is 22mn car kms/year and they carry 500mn passengers/year.
In March 2006, Metro carried 17, 57,000 passengers/day and counted 2.44mn line changes by passengers. An analysis revealed that 49,000 passengers traveled in one hour in one line which is the highest ever till then. The peak hour is 7.30 am to 7.45 am. Line 2 is busy in the evening as there are lot of offices in Paulista which this line services. On Line 3 the there are a total of 66,000 passengers in one hour during the peak morning hours. The average passenger trip length is 9.3 kms. As regards the space occupied by each of the passenger in the cars, it is 7.2 passengers/ sq. mt for Line 3 and 6.6 for Line 1.

The Metro conducts survey with their passengers on different attributes of usage. The attributes listed are Integration, Comfort, Rapidity, Price, Public Security, Safety, Reliability, Utility, and Attendance and Information to the users. Based on the results the Management keeps improving the shortcomings. The recent survey has revealed that they needed to invest on the attribute of ‘Attendance to users’ and it is promptly being done. Out of all the services provided by the government, a survey revealed that Metro emerged number one closely followed by Mail and Fire Brigade.

Metro has taken several steps to improve the signaling, boarding changes where they placed personnel to push and close the doors and improvisation of cars. One of the most touching improvisations was the facility for the traveling physically challenged people. The staff at the point where these people board the train inform the staff at the destination and they prepare to receive them. They have also taken up soil signaling to help the blind to travel without any hassles. The number of cars is also restricted to 6 per train as per the length of the platform.

For the kind of massive operations, the aberrations are minimal with only one derailment in 1999 though there were no casualties. The crime rate is also very low with 2.6 crimes per million people with 80 per cent of them being pick-pocketing. The Metro have their own police in the stations at Sao Paulo and also RDJ. These police have good coordination with civil and Military police.

The service grossed a revenue of Rheas 800 mn in 2005 and has a strong bottomline. The Line 1 has a technical collaboration with Germany and later on with Westinghouse of USA. With a strong workforce of 7000, the longest strike the Metro has ever had was for 6 days. The service gets 6% revenue from shops which are allotted through a process of tender. They also get good revenue from selling ad space in the stations.

Here I realized that General Manager is spelt GERENTE GERAL in Portuguese.

Later on we traveled in the train and checked the security systems, the feel of travelling in the engine car. It was a good day spent learning new and interesting things.
