Airhostesses act with grit

I was on this flight IT 2883 of Kingfisher Airlines from Calicut to Chennai on 18th June 2009. The journey was a long one for me as the route was Calicut - Kochi- Trivandrum and then Chennai scheduled to land at 10.25 pm with a journey time almost four hours. At Kochi there was a change of guard as two young airhostesses whose names I later realised to be Caroline and Sheetal took to duty.

I was in the window seat in row 14 and there was a family of three in row 16 in the ATR 72 flight. Within 15 minutes as the plane took off in Trivandrum for Chennai, the elderly man of the family seated in row 16 starting losing consciousness for some reason. The wife and daughter of this man started to cry and that raised an alarm and all the passengers seated in the front rows became attentive. Initially there was panic in each of their faces. The airhostesses who are hardly in their early twenties jumped to action and provided oxygen for the man while simultaneously keeping their cool. They also had a tough time to keep the wife and the daughter of the man from panicking.

After a few minutes the man started recuperating. Both the airhostesses have shown extraordinary grit in dealing with the situation and they never lost cool despite the situation being very tense. The announcement by Sheetal to find out if there was any doctor or medical practitioner aboard drew a blank response but still they went about their job very professionally and also ensured that the other passengers were at ease by going about serving dinner to all the 42 passengers aboard.

They constantly monitored the situation for the next one and a half hour and also spoke a few words of bravery to both the wife and daughter of the man.

There are a few management and life lessons to be learnt from these two young girls.
1. No matter what, do not lose your cool in any situation
2. It is more important to attend to the situation than keep worrying
3. The result in most of the cases is directly proportional to your sincere efforts.
4. Go about your duty like the bullet that is fired from the barrel without losing the focus
5. If you do your job, God always helps .
