Brazil Diary - Day 13

On this day,we were taken to the SETESP which is a 70 year old transporters union with 6000 companies and 40000 employees in the Sao Paulo state. The number of vehicles managed are a stunning 3,00,000. This is the second biggest such union in the world with the biggest being in LA,USA. The main vehicle being the truck. It was learnt that 8 per cent of the goods are transported by trucks in Brazil. The union works to ensure that the system is in place. In Brazil, there are several restrictions and the trucks are not allowed to go off the main road and enter the city limits. The entry tax is also a huge 55 per cent. The union spends 12 per cent of their income on satellite tracking of the vehicles, sending armed escorts and GSM technology.
The number one tyre brand in Brazil is Goodyear followed by Michelin, Firestone and Continental. There was a big and gigantic personality here with whom I had a photo just to show how big he is.
From here we proceeded to the wives Rotary club which comprised of only the wives of the Rotarians and had our lunch here after a few pegs of whiskey. The Brazilian national anthem and our national anthem were sung here. It was a very colourful afternoon with lot of Brazilian women around.
From here we proceeded to the state assembly which is akin to our government offices but on the face of it they were looking more organized.
In the evening we had dinner at Mr.Paulo Feriera's house with the Governor and proceeded to the TV station of Bandeirentas TV as audience for a daily programme titled 'Boi Noite Brasil'. The anchor is the most famous in Brazil and his name is Zuberto Bahos who is very obese yet highly explosive in the conduct of the events. The program was good except for a few obscenities like the wetting of the young women participants of the show by other male participants.It looked a bit absurd though I enjoyed the show. After the show we went to a restaurent along with the anchor and his wife at 2.00 am(Brazilian time). I called home from Reynoldo's mobile. There was lot of fun but we were feeling very sleepy as we were not used such late night dinners. Finally the day ended at 3.00 am by which time I reached my host's place.
