Brazil Diary - My first international flight

In May 2006, I visited Brazil as a member of GSE team of five and I flew by KLM 0874 flight to Amsterdam from Hyderabad. One thing that gave me great pleasure was that the entire flight was almost full with Telugu speaking people (naturally it has to be as it is from HYD. What has to be
noted is that Indians are feeding the international airlines like never before. India is great. There were people of all ages, young and old, people in dhotis and people in suits, ladies in sarees and in jeans. There is a good mix of our people.

People wanting to break away from traditions and others wanting to embrace more to their beliefs but all are on board, on the road to financial freedom and in the race to make it big in the global arena. There were kids who were at ease in the aircraft and moving around confidently. If this continues our country will no doubt be the economic super power in the world in the years to come.

We flew over Karachi, Tehran, Yeravan, Istanbul, Budapest and Vienna. The flight was over the Carpathian mountains as per the screen in the aircraft. It felt so good as these were the names which I studied during my school days in the social text-books. The plane flew at around 850-870km/hr at an altitude of 36000 feet with the outside temperature showing -50 degrees centigrade. It covered
the distance of almost 7000 kms in 9 1/2 hrs. On landing at Amsterdam at 9 am, the temperature was 17 degrees centigrade.
One grouse I had with KLM was the plane from HYD to AMS was comparatively bad than the one from AMS to GRS( Garrulois). I think KLM should treat Indians well. Indian Govt. should not allow such planes to fly out/in of/to India.

I couldn´t see much of Amsterdam but it was looking great. There appeared to be lot of order. One very interesting thing I noticed in AMS was near the International airport, there were no houses at all. There was only farmland and it was looking great with lots of greenery. Compare this with our own people: the govt. proposes an international airport at Shamshabad and the land rates shoot-up around that place as if people would go to schools, shops and offices by flight. I pity our people in this aspect, whatever you say?

From AMS to GRS, the flight number was KLM0797. The aircraft is really good and it was the Boeing 777. There was more legroom than the HYD-AMS plane which was Macdonald Mc Douglas. The distance of 9785 kms was covered as per the scheduled time at a speed of around 938-950 kms/hr and altitude of 31000 ft. The plane was half full and the passengers had the opportunity to sleep flat on the empty seats. The flight was over London, Southampton and from here it crossed over the English Channel and then flew over St.Peter Port, Brest crossing over Bay of Biscay. After flying over La Coruna, Viga and Viane de Catedo it was over the Atlantic ocean for almost 6 hrs. The first entry into Latin America was at Recife in Brazil. Then over the Sao Miguel, Petrolina, Montes Carlos the plane reached Sao Paulo at 5.30 pm{at 1.00 am (IST)}.

I have to mention about what we did in the flight for 11 hrs. In the first phase I had two pegs of Dewar´s, Finest Scotch whisky along with Mr.Sultan, our team leader. I learnt that Dewar´s is a 160 year-old brand being brewed from 1846. I also had a can of Heineken beer later. The food served was some lettuce, pizza and pastries.

There was a young and beautiful lady behind us(could be a model)who never stopped talking to a young man who was her fellow traveler and friend.I was really astonished at her non-stop talking skills. She was continuously talking during the entire duration of the 11-hr flight.
